Main duties of the job
This post is an additional appointment and the successful candidate would contribute to the major trauma and orthopaedic trauma services.
The successful candidate will be employed by University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust (UHPT) which is closely associated with Plymouth University Peninsula School of Medicine and Dentistry (PUPMED). The successful candidate will be based in the Trauma & Orthopaedic Department where there are numerous teaching and growing research opportunities in collaboration with PUPMED and the clinical trials unit. About us
The Musculoskeletal Service Line
The Service Line has responsibility for all aspects of Orthopaedics, Trauma and Orthogeriatrics services. The Directorate Clinical Director and Directorate Manger have responsibility for the department and are supported by a Matron.
Derriford Hospital has a regional Emergency Department and provides tertiary services including Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neurosurgery and Plastic Surgery in addition to its' status as the Major Trauma Centre for the South West Peninsula.
Scope of the service
The Orthopaedic Department provides emergency and elective inpatient, day case and outpatient services to the catchment population of the Trust, which includes Plymouth and the surrounding area (South Hams and East Cornwall). Most outpatient services are delivered from Derriford Hospital, with outreach clinics being held in community hospitals. Elective operating is delivered at Derriford Hospital. The Paediatric Orthopaedic team offer outreach and in-reach paediatric services for North Devon and Cornwall and have been actively developing a "hub and spoke" model for the delivery of care.

Job responsibilities
To provide a high standard of diagnosis and treatment to inpatients and outpatients in both trauma and elective surgery.
As a senior employee of the Trust, the post holder will work in close cooperation with and support other clinical, medical professional and management colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to our patients.
Integral to the responsibilities of the post are the following:
To ensure the provision of a first-class clinical service
- To provide effective leadership to all staff engaged in the speciality
- To sustain and develop teaching and research wherever appropriate
- To undertake all work in accordance with the Trusts procedures and operating policies
- To conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trusts and Divisions service plans
- To maintain the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty
- To work effectively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team and promote team working
Person specification
Education, qualifications & special training
- oFull GMC Registration oEuropean Community Rights oAn appropriate higher surgical qualification. ETC provider (or equivalent)
- Higher degree. DCOTS Course
Particular skills and experience
- Experience of trauma and relevant sub-specialty surgery at specialist registrar level or equivalent. Appropriate fellowship or equivalent experience. Ability to lead a team.
- Broad and deep experience of trauma and relevant sub-specialty surgery. Understanding of NHS. Good time management.
Research & clinical audit
- Contemporaneous publications in peer reviewed journals. Contemporaneous presentations at national/international congress Evidence of clinical audit.
- NIHR portfolio Quality improvement portfolio
Teaching
- Teaching portfolio.
- Postgraduate teaching qualification. ETC/ATLS instructor.
Communication & interpersonal skills
- High quality presentation of CV/Application Team working portfolio
