Main duties of the job
We are looking for a Consultant Clinical Psychologist to work alongside the Director of Medical Psychology and lead a team of Clinical Psychologists and other staff to provide specialist clinical services, supervision and leadership across two CSUs and within the North Tees and Hartlepool team.
As a department we provide input across the Group into a range of specialities with nearly all CSUs including but not limited to; neuropsychology, oncology, haematology, palliative care, rheumatology, diabetes, pain, CFS, infectious diseases, renal, burns and plastics. The post holder will have responsibilities for providing leadership within the specific area of the Trauma and Critical Care within CSUs 3 and 4 psychology service.
The post holder will take a lead on specific audit and service evaluation projects and will be involved in service development projects with the aim of expanding the service in line with national guidelines and standards. The post will also involve line management and clinical supervision of other staff.
The role will also provide senior leadership support and oversight to the North Tees and Hartlepool team supporting the Director of Medical Psychology
Applicants will need to have had experience of working in a clinical health setting.

Knowledge
- Doctoral level knowledge of research design and methodology, including complex multivariate data analysis as practiced within the field of psychology.
- Knowledge of legislation in relation to relevant client groups and the healthcare system.
- Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological & neuropsychological assessment, intervention and management frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration.
- Well-developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, highly technical, and clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS.
- Ability to demonstrate leadership and management skills
- Ability to develop and use complex multi-media materials for presentations in public, professional and academic settings.
- Knowledge of Trauma, Orthopaedics and/or Critical Care
Qualifications
- Post-graduate doctoral level training in Clinical Psychology (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996) or Health Psychology or Counselling Psychology as accredited by the BPS &/or HCPC, including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology.
- Post-doctoral training in the supervision of trainee Clinical Psychologists or Counselling Psychologists or Health Psychologists
- HCPC Registration as a Clinical Psychologist or Counselling Psychologist or Health Psychologist
- Evidence of advanced post-doctoral training in a therapeutic approach relevant to the psychological needs of medical patients (e.g. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy)
- Evidence of continuing professional development as required by the BPS and HCPC
- Attendance at a leadership programme
- Publication record
- Contribution to national professional networks
- Evidence of CPD for psychology in acute setting
Experience
- Substantial experience of working as a qualified psychologist in medical settings including outpatient, community, and inpatient settings
- Experience of exercising full clinical responsibility for clients' psychological care and treatment, both as an individual practitioner and also within the context of multidisciplinary care.
- Experience of line management, professional management and/or clinical supervision of staff
- Experience of leadership within an acute trust
- Experience in digital health innovation and service transformation

- Ability to contain and work with organisational stress and ability to manage the stress of others.
- Ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems and verbal and physical abuse.
- A passion and enthusiasm for working with patients in a medical psychology setting
